CAPABILITY & SPECIFICATION

Capability & Engineering Review

What it is

Precision connectors and electronic structural parts are the most precision-critical category of molded part. They are not judged on appearance but on three things: whether the terminals fit, whether they sit in the right place once fitted, and whether their undersides end up coplanar once mounted to the board.

Take a 0.5mm-pitch connector: terminal pitch tolerance, terminal-cavity dimensional accuracy and terminal coplanarity typically sit in the hundredths-of-a-millimetre range. That demands tool electrode accuracy, press repeatability and material dimensional stability all at once — the highest combined demand the toolroom and the molding floor can be asked to meet.

Structural features visible in the product photo

The photo shows a family of connector plastic parts (roughly 12 pieces) arranged in a ring, all with black thermoplastic bodies. The following configurations can be identified:

Terminal-cavity type — several parts with single- or double-row terminal cavities, with metal terminals visible inside some cavities and a gold appearance
Parallel fine-slot type — several parts carrying dense parallel fine slots, the characteristic form of IDC (insulation-displacement) connectors used for ribbon-cable termination
Elongated mating-cavity type — several parts are elongated bodies with an open mating cavity at one end (in the centre part, terminals are densely arrayed along the length inside the opening)
Mounting-feature type — some parts show mounting holes, locating posts or snap-fit lugs
Manufacturing capability

The part is developed on in-house tooling design and manufacturing. The toolroom runs wire EDM, jig grinding, surface grinding, form grinding, CNC machining centres and EDM — 11 key machines forming a complete precision machining chain. On the molding side, 20 in-house machines combine all-electric, servo and vertical presses — the all-electric machines offering the repeatability precision small parts require, and the vertical machines suiting terminal insertion and insert-molding work.

Integrated finishing

After molding, spray coating, silk-screen printing, pad printing, electroplating and anodizing can be integrated, reducing multi-supplier coordination and the quality handover risk it brings. Connector-type products commonly also involve terminal insertion, crimping and appearance inspection.
